Dr. Garvey, director of the Philadelphia Police Department's Forensics Department visited for a Career Chatter on Tuesday, 5/6/25. He highlighted the importance of staying open to opportunities over the course of a career. Initially interested in medical school, and working as a paramedic during college, he pivoted to forensics and worked with the FBI and later the CIA in identifying individuals from flight 93 on 9/11. He discussed the importance of using DNA technology as a tool in the context of critical thinking (about what it can and cannot tell us). His advice to students pursuing a career in forensics is to apply to programs with strong science courses and requirements and to specialize in chemistry and biology rather than criminal justice. We are #AbingtonProud #ASHSProud #FirstinAcademics @abingtonschooldistrict

On Thursday, May 1st the Business and Entrepreneurship Career Chatter hosted Tom Dunn and Joe Rinaldi in Think Tank 2. Students thoroughly participated in a well-rounded Q&A session, and walked away with contacts for potential future endeavors. On April 24, Abington Senior High School opened a new pop-up educational art installation for students and staff, timed to Holocaust Remembrance Day. The exhibit, which was curated by teachers of the Holocaust, Genocide, and Crimes Against Humanity course, in partnership with the Holocaust Awareness Museum and Education Center in Elkins Park, includes five artworks about the Auschwitz experience, all created by Frank Root, the spouse of a survivor.
The art pieces are static, but each one has a QR code for students to explore the topic and event related in the work. Social studies classes throughout the school visit the exhibit one at a time, where the teachers lead a discussion about the pieces.
