Highland Elementary recently kicked off its annual "One Book, One Highland" initiative with an assembly! Students watched a skit performed by Dr. Etlen and Highland staff, which revealed this year's book: "Crenshaw" by Katherine Applegate. They then listened to the first two chapters of the book, read by Officer Begley. #ASDProud #ASDReads

Earlier this month, Overlook Elementary participated in the annual National African American Read-In, established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English, to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month. A book is carefully selected for each grade level to celebrate diversity and promote respect for cultural differences through discussions and reflections about the literature. Afterward, students participate in activities about the books. #ASDProud #ASDReads

Just in time for Read Across America Week, celebrated March 2-6, 2025, Abington School District Is launching a new poster campaign called “ASD Reads!”, designed to promote literacy and encourage a love of reading among students of all ages.
With more than 100 unique designs that will be displayed across the District’s 10 school buildings, bus garage and Administration Building, the poster artwork features staff members districtwide, including teachers, paraprofessionals, administrative assistants, bus drivers, custodians, administrators and more. School directors were also included in the campaign. All of the featured personnel were photographed holding their favorite book so that they can share this personal fun fact about themselves with students.
“ASD Reads!” posters will be displayed throughout each school, from libraries and cafeterias, to hallways and classrooms, beginning this week. For more information, and a full album of all the poster designs, visit https://www.abingtonsd.org/article/2043291. #ASDProud #ASDReads #ReadAcrossAmerica

Students in Ms. Frank's kindergarten class at Roslyn Elementary School, as well as a few other elementary classes across the District, had an opportunity to start the process by drawing and designing their own monster, inspired by the book "The Color Monster". Their designs will eventually be brought to life by the 8th grade students this spring during their sewing unit! #ASDProud
