
Earlier this week, Willow Hill Elementary School celebrated Black History Month with the 35th annual African American Read-In, where older students read books by African Amercian authors or illustrators to students in younger grades. Congratulations to Abington Senior High School junior, Selina Wu, who was recommended by the Abington Senior High School Student School Board Member Committee, and chosen by her peers in a subsequent student body election, to serve as the very first Student School Board Member! As a non-voting member of the Board, Selina will hold this position for the duration of the school year. #ASDProud

Thank you to the ACME Markets Foundation for granting Abington School District $3,000 in grocery gift cards as part of ACME's Summer Nourishing Neighbors fundraising campaign. The 120, $25 gift cards will be distributed by our District social workers to help feed our school community.

After a multi-year planning process, at the January 28 meeting of the Board of School Directors, the Board voted unanimously to put a $285 million Abington Middle School investment plan on the ballot during the primary election. Eligible voters in Abington Township and the Borough of Rockledge will vote on the plan on Tuesday, May 20.

Overlook Elementary hosted the annual Scripps Spelling Bee on Friday, January 24, which marked 100 years of the competition! Milo Press, the winner of the schoolwide bee will move on to the regional competition. Congratulations to Milo and all of the classroom winners! #ASDProud

ASHS senior, Mina Fujii, has been named a 2025 YoungArts winner with distinction in Visual Arts, the organization's highest honor. Today, Dr. Fecher and Dr. Melchor hosted the second meeting for the 2024-2025 school year of the Superintendent's Student Advisory Council. The meeting included Chartwells staff members, Ms. Chenille Traylor, Director, and Mr. T.J. Gaetano, Executive Chef. The students had an opportunity to provide feedback and discuss suggestions they had for food service in their school cafeterias. #ASDProud



Last week ASD elementary schools commemorated the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Activities included assemblies honoring Dr. King's legacy, participation in the Sock Roll Challenge for the homeless, and student Peace Award Recognition ceremonies. #ASDProud

UPDATE: The Board of School Directors took a key step forward in its planning process for the future of Abington Middle School. After reviewing community survey results and assessing research and independent analysis, the Board expressed a desire to pursue a plan to build one new middle school on the current campus. The District will now prepare a resolution to fund this project through a referendum, which would be voted on by Abington Township and Borough of Rockledge residents. The Board will review and vote on this resolution at the January 28 meeting of the Board of School Directors. Using Afghan Refugee School Impact Grant funds, the "I'm Your Neighbor" welcome library was purchased to provide multilingual and multicultural literature at Rydal Elementary School and Abington Senior High School, all in an effort to help welcome our refugee and newcomer students! #ASDProud

Dr. Fecher is continuing his TableTalks in the 2024-2025 school year by joining PTO/PTA meetings across the District. Last night, he talked with parents and guardians at McKinley Elementary School to listen to their feedback in a small group setting. #ASDProud


Now through March 31, everyone who shops at the GIANT on Susquehanna Road in Roslyn will be invited to “round up” at the register and donate the round-up amount of their bill to support Feeding School Kids. Customers can also give by converting their CHOICE Rewards Points to donations in the GIANT app, or by purchasing a reusable bag.
At the end of March, all round-up donations will be tallied and donated to Abington School District. Donations have been used by the Student Services Department to purchase GIANT gift cards that are distributed by our social workers directly to our families in need in order to help supplement the cost of their groceries.
