Today, our DARE Program for our 5th Grade Students had a very special visit from Officer Raymond De Los Santos and his talented Bloodhound K9 partner, Moose!
The students learned that Moose isn't just a friendly pup—he is a highly trained professional. The officer explained how Moose uses his incredible sense of smell to track missing people. Moose came to the Abington Police Force from a shelter. How lucky we are to have him in Abington!

At Overlook and Willow Hill elementary schools, students and staff celebrated Black History Month with a visit from award-winning author and historian, Ms. Alice Faye Duncan, whose nationally acclaimed books combine historical research with poetry and music as a means of introducing children to the efforts of Civil Rights icons, such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, Blues legend BB King, and Olympic champion Willie B. Willow Hill Elementary School kicked off Black History Month with the annual tradition of participating in the National African American Read-In, where older students read to younger students and form a human reading chain from one end of the building to the other. Students had the opportunity to pick out reading materials ahead of time from a selection of books created by African American authors and/or illustrators. #ASDProud #ASDReads

On February 3rd, Willow Hill enjoyed a live performance from the Touring Outreach company from The Walnut Street Theater. Four actors performed the musical Grace for President. In this show, a 5th grader named Grace learns that by believing in herself, working hard, and standing up for what’s right, she can show everyone that anyone—boy or girl—can be a great leader and make a difference in their school and community. After the show, some students got to ask the actors questions!

On Monday February 2nd, Willow Hill participated in the 36th national African-American Read-In to kick off Black History Month.
The first African-American Read-In was sponsored by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English in 1990. The goal of the Read-In is to make the celebration of African American literacy a traditional part of Black History Month activities. Willow Hill students and teachers will join over a million readers of all ethnic groups, from 49 states, the West Indies, and African countries in reading and listening to books by African American authors and illustrators.
In January, Willow Hill's librarian helped students in grades 3-5 pick out a picture book by an African American author or illustrator. The older grade students were then paired up with a younger student. They sat next to each other in the hallway, across the entire school, forming a human reading chain.
Older students read aloud from the book as the younger students listened.
