Nearly One-third of Students Took an AP Exam; More than 180 Students Awarded the AP Scholar of Distinction Designation
Abington School District is proud to announce that students at Abington Senior High School (ASHS) achieved exceptional scores on the latest round of Advanced Placement (AP) Exams administered by the College Board in spring 2026.
This year, a total of 829 ASHS students challenged themselves by taking 1,897 AP Exams across 32 subjects, ranging from the sciences and mathematics, to the humanities and fine arts.
The results reflect the District’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence and access for all students, in addition to fostering an educational experience centered on the District’s Portrait of a Graduate.
Academic Excellence
Most notably, 84 percent of ASHS student test-takers earned a score of 3 or higher on a five-point scale – the score typically required to receive college credit or advanced placement at major colleges and universities.
Advanced Placement courses follow strict curriculum guidelines authorized by the College Board, offering high school students a preview of college-level academics. Earning high marks on these exams allows ASHS graduates to enter higher education with a competitive edge, often saving time and tuition dollars.
The average score among all AP Exams administered in ASHS was 3.60. Abington students performed best in the following subjects, as ranked by their respective average scores:
Drawing (5)
Physics C: Mechanics (4.71)
Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism (4.36)
3-D Art and Design (4)
U.S. Government and Politics (3.95)
Spanish Language and Culture (3.94)
English Language and Composition (3.93) / U.S. History (3.93)
African American Studies (3.89)
Seminar (3.78)
ASHS students’ average scores in the subjects listed above exceeded those of their peers at the state level – and globally – further underscoring the benefits of an Abington School District education.
Access for All Students
While not all students who are enrolled in an AP class will ultimately choose to take the course’s associated exam, in a school of more than 2,600 students, these results demonstrate that more than 30 percent of ASHS students took at least one AP Exam in spring 2026, which is a reflection of Abington School District’s dedication to educating all students. Through this commitment that allows every student to have access to rigorous coursework, ASHS saw an additional 49 students take exams this year – compared to the spring 2025 exam cycle – which yielded an additional 116 completed AP Exams.
"One of the benefits of an Abington Senior High School education is the breadth of subjects in which we offer challenging and competitive coursework that allows all of our students to be better prepared for college and/or careers,” Dr. Jeffrey Fecher, Superintendent of Schools, said. “These AP results, collectively achieved by nearly a third of our high school student body, are a testament not only to the hard work of our students, but also to our highly qualified team of educators who foster engaging and innovative learning environments every day for every student. I appreciate our AP teachers for exemplifying our District mission and vision rooted in excellence and achievement.”
AP Scholar Awards
The impressive scores earned by ASHS students also provided an opportunity for them to be honored with AP Scholar Awards, which recognize high school students who have demonstrated exemplary college-level achievement on AP Exams. College Board recognized ASHS students with the following designations:
AP Scholar - Given to 113 students who received scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams
AP Scholar with Honor - Given to 66 students who received an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams
AP Scholar with Distinction - Given to 181 students who received an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams
AP Capstone Diploma - Given to 18 students who earned scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar, AP Research, and on four additional AP Exams of their choice
AP Seminar and Research Certificate - Given to four students who earned a score of 3 or higher on both the AP Seminar Exam and the AP Research Exam, which are two separate courses taken over the span of two years
